Elluminate Live!
Student / Participant Information
What is Elluminate Live (eLive)?
JHU has licensed a piece of software to serve as a companion to WebCT called Elluminate Live! or eLive for short. It serves as a more full featured alternative to WebCT's built in synchronous communication tools, Chat and Whiteboard. eLive has a much more advanced whiteboard, text chat capability, full duplex voice over the internet, live webcam, and multimedia playback capabilities. Sessions may be recorded so that you can view all the content and interactions later if you can't make the session. It is an excellent tool for office hours, student meeting space for group projects, and occasional guest lectures.

How do I access an eLive session?
eLive sessions are scheduled by a session leader (moderator). If you are to attend an eLive session you will be provided with a link that will allow you to access your scheduled session. If you are a student, this link should be provided to you by your instructor in your Course Calendar. Optionally, an eLive session access link may be provided to you in an email or posted somewhere else that you have access to. A session link is the ONLY way you can access an eLive session as a participant. You may click on the link to access your scheduled session up to 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time of the session. You will be prompted for a User Name upon entering the session, simply enter your first and last name or a name that will easily identify you to others in the eLive room.
Do I need a Username and Password to access eLive?
No. eLive does not require the assignment of a username and password for access to scheduled sessions. The link provided to you for your session is what will allow you to gain access. Simply click on the link and when prompted for a Username, enter your first and last name or a name that will easily identify you to others in the eLive room.
What equipment is needed to enhance my eLive experience?
Speakers attached to your computer are necessary to hear the eLive session. It is also highly recommended that you have a microphone as well. By using a microphone you will be able to fully participate in the session and talk to the moderator and others in the session using eLive's Voice Over IP features. You do not need a special microphone to participate. Microphones are available at most computer retailers ( Walmart, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.) and fairly inexpensive (some can be bought for under $10.00). Additionally, many laptop computers have microphones built in.
Do I need a high-speed internet connection?
No, you do not need a high-speed internet connection to enjoy the full functionality of eLive. You will be able to experience the real time VoIP, whiteboard, chat, and other features on a standard dial up connection without a delay. The only feature of eLive that may be delayed when using a dial up connection is Application Sharing and viewing live video.
What should I do when I enter the eLive classroom?
When you enter the eLive classroom you should be sure to set your connection speed properly. The first time you log into eLive you will be prompted to set your Connection Speed. You should choose the speed that your computer connects to the internet. This setting will be saved for future sessions. If your connection speed changes such as switching from a dial up to DSL, you may reset your connection speed from the Session menu at the top of the eLive classroom screen. From the Session menu select Connection Speed and then set the connection speed to match your computer's current connection speed to the internet.
How do I communicate with others in the room?
There are two ways to communicate with others in the eLive room.
